five phases — verbs, not substances

The five phases are the engine room of the whole system. The crucial move is in the name: xíng means "to move, to walk." The five are not elements sitting in a periodic table — they are five kinds of movement, five phases in a cycle. wood is not lumber; it is growing. fire is not a campfire; it is rising and giving light. earth is not dirt; it is steadying and transforming. metal is not a sword; it is condensing and cutting. water is not a glass of water; it is descending and storing.

Two cycles connect the five. shēng — the generating cycle — is the order of the seasons: wood feeds fire, fire leaves ash that feeds earth, earth yields ore that is metal, metal condenses dew that is water, water nourishes wood. kè — the restraining cycle — is the order of the check: wood holds soil with its roots, soil channels water with its banks, water cools fire, fire forges metal, metal fells wood.

the five, one by one

Each phase gets one paragraph — the traditional picture, read as process.

wood: the beginning. Spring, dawn, the east wind. Wood plans before it acts — the seed knows the tree. In a chart, wood marks growth, direction, ideals, the long arc.

fire: the climax. Summer, noon, the south. Fire gives light without keeping anything — the most expressive, least storing phase. In a chart, fire marks warmth, speech, brightness, the visible self.

earth: the pivot. Late summer, the turning of seasons, the center. Earth transforms — the compost that turns one season into the next. In a chart, earth marks steadiness, reliability, the middle of things.

metal: the harvest. Autumn, evening, the west. Metal condenses what was scattered and cuts away what does not belong. In a chart, metal marks discernment, finish, judgment, the clean edge.

water: the deep. Winter, night, the north. Water descends to the lowest place and stores. In a chart, water marks depth, memory, wisdom, the hidden self.

wood — growth, direction, the spring push
fire — light, expression, summer at height
earth — center, stability, the turning of seasons
metal — consolidation, discernment, autumn harvest
water — depth, flow, winter storage

the generating cycle, link by link

— wood feeds fire: every flame is the past season burning. — fire leaves earth: ash is the memory of flame. — earth yields metal: ore is mined from the mountain. — metal condenses water: a cold blade gathers dew. — water nourishes wood: the seed drinks the dark. Each link is a parent and a child; the cycle has no top and no bottom, only a current.

the restraining cycle, link by link

is the most misread word in the system. It is restraint, not destruction: the riverbank, not the flood. — roots hold the soil against the rain. — the bank gives the river its channel; without the bank, no river. — water sets the fire's boundary. — the forge softens the blade so it can be shaped. — the axe fells the tree so the wood can serve. Every one of these is care with teeth. The tradition even has names for the broken forms: chéng, restraint over-applied, and wǔ, the weaker turning on the stronger — the pathological cases that show the healthy cycle by contrast.

generates — 木生火, 火生土, 土生金, 金生水, 水生木
restrains — 木克土, 土克水, 水克火, 火克金, 金克木
over-restraint — restraint applied beyond its measure
rebellion — the weaker phase turning on the stronger

the phases in your chart

Every character in your chart belongs to one phase. The day stem's phase is the chart's center of gravity — the 日主 day master. The month branch names the season you were born into, and the season sets the climate: a winter month () looks for fire the way a cold room looks for a stove; a summer month () looks for water. That need is called 调候 tiáo hòu (module 8), and the transit timeline marks the years that supply it.

The classical doctrine of seasonal strength — — says a phase is at its fullest in its own season and weakest in the season that restrains it: wood flourishes in spring, rests in winter, is confined by autumn metal. Read it as weather vocabulary: it describes the season's climate for each phase, not a verdict on a person.

flourishing — the phase in its own season
supported — the phase generated by the season
resting — the phase that generates the season
confined — the phase that restrains the season
dormant — the phase the season restrains
